HUAWEI P20 SERIES: FULL CAMERA REVIEW

PART 7: CONCLUSIONS | TEAM TCR RECOMMENDS..

Overall, the new P20 Series phones brought their A game to the party. Competitive pricing and just the right amount of updates for everyone to look forward to.

Some comments and insights from our TCR Team:

P20 Lite thoughts

  • With the Huawei P20 Lite’s 16 Megapixel camera, the photos provided good results. When taking a selfie or groufie, colors look more lively without compromising the details/facial features of the person just to make it beautified.

  • Quality of shots using the front and the main camera is almost similar since it is both equipped with 16 Megapixels though results may vary in some situations. I also observed that the shutter button’s response is also quick which is great when you need to capture an image in a snap.

  • Taking photos in low light will make the photo appear a bit darker, compared to taking a shot indoors. However, using the HDR feature of this device will make a lot of difference. HDR is actually helpful for people who is not familiar with playing around the Pro mode features like the ISO, shutter speed, etc.

  • The AR lens provides a fun alternative to suiting up your selfies just like Facebook messenger. Difference is you can use them even if you're not connected to the internet.

P20 and P20 Pro thoughts

  • The 24mp front-facing camera delivers great results not only because of its upgraded hardware but with the help of its super software algorithms. Highlights and shadows are retained even when taking photos under harsh/strong light. It adapts fast enough especially in low light situations.

  • The 3D portrait feature may or may not be a hit with most users but added feature is always great. Refinements will always come in future updates and things can only get better.

  • Color accuracy has been greatly improved with the help of the COLOR TEMPERATURE SENSOR. Photos appear on screen as natural as they can be.

  • The MASTER AI feature can be somewhat aggressive at times but can be helpful for those who do not want to tinker around with the camera settings and/or the PRO mode.

  • Night mode no tripod shots are really GREAT! It can be used in more ways than 1.

  • Overall the P20 Series flagship phones deliver more than we could have imagined.

  • The Slo Mo feature is a really great update. We are expecting more once the first few updates are rolled out in the future. This feature is definitely helpful when creating your montage, capturing moments and can even be useful when in vlogs.

SO... SHOULD YOU BUY THE P20 LITE OR P20 FLAGSHIP PHONES?

This will always be a matter of personal preference. But all things considered, we can say that these phones deliver as they have promised. The Camera is just one part of the whole and looking at all the details, Huawei did not disappoint.

  • 40mp RGB lens

  • 20mp monochrome lens

  • 8mp zoom/telephoto lens

  • 3 lenses working in unison is definitely a first

  • handheld/no tripod night mode

  • extra modes for long exposure

  • colored lens + monochrome lens for details

  • superb low light shots

  • dedicated AI processor with machine learning algorithm

  • The P20 also uses the same software camera present in the P20 Pro - you get the same upgraded Night Shot mode (no tripod, no problem) as well as the same camera settings.

  • P20 - these dual cameras are still up to the task. With the same software as its Pro sibling, the camera features (minus the zoom lens) are pretty much the exact same thing/s.

  • Justifiable price point for the camera setup? BIG YES.

  • P20 Lite - very capable despite its limitations. Test photos and videos came out really great for a mid range contender. Users who will get the Lite version still have a PRO mode for those who prefer to tinker with manual settings, Light Painting modes, and wide aperture/bokeh modes present in the flagship series although with minor limitations.
