HUAWEI P20 SERIES: FULL CAMERA REVIEW

PART 1: FRONT CAMERA

All Huawei P20 Series Smartphones come with a small notch and use the same notch configuration. It houses the earpiece/receiver, which also acts as stereo speakers for the P20 and P20 Pro. The sensors array - home for the ambient light and the LED notification light. And the front camera.

The P20 and P20 Pro both use a 24mp front-facing shooter while Lite version makes use of a 16mp camera. Smartphones have come a long way and these selfie cameras can only get better over time. The P20 Lite version may only have a 16mp camera but it definitely works and delivers as expected. With the 24mp resolution and superb software algorithm, Huawei P20 and P20 Pro front camera creates decent photos. It retains the details of highlights and shadows and the images are not blown-out when shooting in strong lighting conditions.

When used indoors, the front camera performs well and it balances the amount of light so that it captures the details of the subject’s face. Like most of Huawei's phones, the Huawei P20/Pro uses its screen as a soft flash and slightly increases the ISO when it detects lowlight conditions. That means that the photos come out bright enough while keeping the natural colours and details.

The P20 and the Pro version both have the new 3D portrait function. You may have already seen this mode/function from other phones and now Huawei has it. So if you like to work on some faux lighting effects on your photos then this is probably where you'd want to start. The 3D portrait function also works like the wide aperture function wherein you can adjust the lighting and the 3D effect after taking the shot or opening it in the gallery.

Overall, the front camera is perfect for selfie lovers who are not into over-processing or don’t want so much beautification. Regular beauty and artistic bokeh are available on screen when taking portrait shots.
