HUAWEI P20 SERIES: FULL CAMERA REVIEW

PART 2: REAR CAMERA (INDOOR)

Before we proceed we'll have a quick look at the dual and triple camera setup of the P20 and the P20 Pro. The dual camera combo being used on the regular P20 is reminiscent of the P10 but with the updated components found on the Mate 10 series.

We have the 12mp RGB + 20mp monochrome sensors with f1.8 and f1.6 apertures respectively. This means that low lights shots can be easier to shoot even when using auto mode especially if we are to compare these lenses with that of other models including the P9 series phones.

The P20 Pro uses an updated 40mp//f1.8 RGB sensor + 20mp//f1.6 Monochrome sensor + the third 8mp//f2.4 zoom lens which helps alot especially in cleaning out the edges in the aperture/bokeh mode as well as the portrait mode. These lenses and sensors combine everything that they see to #SeeMooore.

The native working resolution for the dual cameras on the P20 is 12mp. This allows 2x hybrid zoom which is also present in the Mate 9, P10 and the Mate 10 phones. The 40mp solo resolution on the P20 Pro provides high detail shots but does not allow any form of zoom to work. For the P20 Pro, its native resolution (for the 3 cameras to work together) is set to 10mp. In previous models starting with the Mate 9, P10, Mate 10 and now the dual cam P20, notice that the RGB sensor is the smaller/lower resolution - 12mp while the monochrome is still at 20mp. The P20 Pro now has 2x the monochrome sensors megapixel count at 40mp.

From what Huawei described in their Barcelona launch, all these technology updates and upgrades provide more detailed photos with sensors comparable to that of a DSLR. They do have the biggest internal sensor for a smartphone today. Huawei of course retains their dedicated monochrome sensor for additional detail and wonderful black & white shots. The addition of the 3rd (zoom/telephoto) lens from our point of view helps provide additional depth information which contributes in getting the best shots out of an "Intelligent" phone.
