HUAWEI P20 SERIES: FULL CAMERA REVIEW

PART 3: REAR CAMERA (OUTDOOR)

Outdoors. Basically what we're after is how well the cameras work in daylight and natural light situations. For the most part, we all know that most phones will have and will show ample details, enough brightness, contrast and dynamic range. But even in good lighting conditions, there are instances, regardless of phone brand and model where some shots come out as not how we'd expect them to.

The new P20 Series updates are not only for show. What they updated and upgraded in hardware, they also made sure it was paired with updated software. The original 13 scenes recognized by the AI system are now updated to up to 19 scenes. They now introduce their "MASTER AI" switch which is found in the camera settings for both the P20 and P20 Pro. This allows the dedicated Huawei Kirin 970 NPU to decide what you're trying to capture and adjust to the best settings applicable. We at TCR found this Master AI a little too aggressive at times but it's also a learning experience given what the AI system can do. It may be a little too annoying for photographers especially if they already know or have their own approach when taking shots, but for everyone else who are still trying to learn, this is definitely a start.

All it takes is to launch the camera app, point at what you're trying to capture and tap/click on the shutter button. Alternatively you can reassign the volume keys to either snap the photo or use it as zoom keys. Everybody wants Instagram and Facebook worthy shots. Aside for knowing your photography basics, a really good quality snapper is also part of the equation. Not everyone has the time and the patience to fiddle around with PRO/Manual mode. Most of the time, not everyone knows how to frame shots. Most normal users just want a camera that's good enough to leave on AUTO. Great colors, good and enough lighting, incredible low light performance and with the introduction of the "Handheld" Night Shot (and who wouldn't want a no tripod night shot?), Huawei was really serious with their #SeeMooore hashtag.
